When are auditions held?
Regular auditions for string players are held twice a year in the fall and spring. Wind, brass and percussion players can also audition at this time, or wait until the marching contest season is finished, usually in late October or early November.
Can I audition for the orchestra at any other time?
Students wishing to join the program at a different time should fill out the audition registration form and wait to be contacted by the Executive Director. We usually accept students year-round as space allows.
Which ensemble should I audition for?
Placement in an ensemble is based on music ability, not age. Pick the ensemble that seems closest to the student's abilities. You can find the descriptions here. If you are not selected to participate in the ensemble for which you auditioned, you will be offered a spot in the next lower ensemble.
Where will the audition take place?
Usually they will take place at the UNT Music Building, but you will be notified for sure when scheduling the audition.
What will happen the day of my audition?
When you arrive, you will first sign-in in the foyer and then will be directed to a warm up room. Feel free to come as early as you like so you have time to warm up and feel relaxed and ready. When it is your time to audition, a volunteer will come and get you and escort you to the audition room. There you will meet some of our conductors and will be asked to perform your music. They know you will be nervous and will do everything they can to help you feel relaxed. After you are finished, you will return to the warm up room to pack up.
What should I wear for my audition?
Wear something that is comfortable to play your instrument in. Concert blacks are not required but if that makes you feel more comfortable you can wear them. You will not be judged on your looks.
When and how will I find out my results?
You will be notified by email within one week of the date of the last audition.
How do I find out about receiving financial assistance?
Please indicate your need on your audition registration form and fill out the financial assistance form on the Financial Information page. You will then be emailed the full application form. You will be notified by the Executive Director if you qualify for financial assistance.
